Motor vehicle tax can now be paid from a digital wallet while waiting for your coffee to brew. However, there is one thing that is often overlooked: paying does not necessarily mean your STNK (vehicle registration certificate) is validated. In some channels, the receipt from your phone still needs to be exchanged at Samsat, and the deadline is only 30 days.
Pay the code first, cashier later
Almost all online channels operate in the same way. The bill and payment code are issued by official applications: SIGNAL (National Digital Samsat) or provincial Samsat applications, such as Sambara in the Sapawarga app for West Java. The code can then be paid through any channel that accepts it: m-banking, ATM, digital wallets, marketplaces, minimarkets, or post offices.
This means that digital wallets and marketplaces only serve as cashiers. What determines whether your STNK is directly valid or not is where the payment code is issued from.
| Channel | Payment code from | Example payment locations | After payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIGNAL (national) | SIGNAL application | Bank (in Livin' by Mandiri via biller 60110), digital wallets like DANA and LinkAja, retail outlets, e-commerce, Pospay | e-Validation and e-TBPKP issued in the app. Physical proof sent by post or picked up at Samsat |
| e-Samsat West Java | Sambara in Sapawarga | ATM bjb, BNI, BCA; Tokopedia, Kaspro, Alfamart, Alfamidi, Indomaret, bjb tellers, PPOB | Validation at Samsat. ATM receipt from e-Samsat must be brought along with the e-ID and original STNK no later than 30 days |
| e-Samsat DKI Jakarta | DKI Bank Channel | ATM and EDC Bank DKI, JakOne Mobile including QRIS | Exchange receipt at e-Samsat counter no later than 30 days |
West Java and Jakarta are just examples. Other provinces have their own applications and partner lists, so check on your provincial Bapenda website.
When online payments are rejected
Online channels are designed for the simplest cases. Your vehicle must meet the following requirements:
- Only annual tax. Five-year extensions, which also replace the STNK and plate, must still go to Samsat because there is a physical check of the chassis and engine numbers. The original BPKB (vehicle ownership document) must also be brought.
- NIK must match. Jakarta requires the NIK (National Identity Number) in the vehicle data to be the same as the NIK in the bank account. SIGNAL accepts vehicles registered in your name, or in the name of family members on the same Family Card by uploading the owner's ID card. Used vehicles that have not been transferred often stumble here.
- There is a limit on lateness. SIGNAL's official FAQ states that payments can still be made through the app up to two months after the due date. e-Samsat West Java accepts taxes that are less than six months overdue, and Jakarta as long as the arrears are not yet a year.
- Not a business entity vehicle (requirement for e-Samsat West Java) and not currently blocked.
- Jakarta only opens payments 40 days before the due date.
If your arrears have exceeded those limits, prepare to go to the counter. To ensure the amount is correct, first calculate the fine per year of tax using the vehicle tax and fine calculator from the figures on your STNK tax sheet.
Small fees and payment code deadlines
- SIGNAL charges Rp10,000 for each transaction (SIGNAL FAQ).
- The SIGNAL payment code is only valid for two hours, so prepare your balance before generating the code.
- Through Tokopedia, payments at Alfamart or Indomaret incur an admin fee of Rp2,500. Bills that are not paid within a day are considered void.
The final step that is often forgotten
In the provincial e-Samsat channel, the receipt from the ATM or application is not yet valid proof. That receipt must be exchanged for SKKP (Vehicle Tax Payment Receipt) and STNK validation at Samsat, no later than 30 days after payment. If the receipt is lost or does not come out, Jakarta requires you to go to the branch office of the bank that opened the account to obtain a replacement SKET.
The SIGNAL channel does not need to be exchanged because the validation is issued digitally. However, the SIGNAL FAQ emphasizes that the physical STNK is still required; the e-Validation does not replace the card.
So the choice is simple. Vehicles in your name and not overdue: SIGNAL, then pay using the digital wallet or m-banking that you prefer. If it is long overdue, time for a five-year extension, or still in the name of the previous owner: go directly to the Samsat counter.
