Many ERP projects stall not because of the software, but due to business processes that have not been clearly mapped. The process approach emphasizes that activities must be managed as a series of interacting elements to ensure consistent and measurable results, a principle that is a pillar of ISO 9001.
Mapping techniques such as flowcharts, SIPOC, or swimlanes help organizations visualize the flow of input > process > output, identify bottlenecks, and agree on cross-functional work standards. This practice is not just documentation; it facilitates error detection and enhances role clarity before automation is implemented.
Once the processes are organized, integration through ERP can provide full value. The Odoo ecosystem, for example, connects sales, inventory, purchasing, accounting, and POS modules so that the movement of goods, sales, and financial figures are automatically synchronized, creating a “single source of truth” for operations. Its official documentation emphasizes this integration (automatic stock from POS, purchase analytics, and warehouse management), while customer case studies demonstrate how process consolidation eliminates manual work and data fragmentation.
For SMEs or small teams, the sequence is straightforward: map core processes > test quick wins > then configure ERP in the most impactful areas. This way, digital transformation is not just about installing applications, but about building a more disciplined and sustainable way of working.
The reference to ISO 9001 above needs to be dated, as its edition is changing. The principles of the process approach remain unchanged, but the documents containing them are evolving. As of September 5, 2026, ISO 9001:2015 will still be the applicable edition, while the sixth edition has entered the "under publication" stage at ISO since July 10, 2026. The technical committee working on it, ISO/TC 176/SC 2, announced on August 7, 2026, that the final draft has been approved and publication is scheduled for September 16, 2026.
There is one more thing that is often overlooked even before the new edition is published. ISO 9001:2015 has already been amended by ISO 9001:2015/Amd 1:2024 regarding changes related to climate action, published on February 23, 2024, and provided free of charge by ISO. This means that procedures stating "referring to ISO 9001:2015" are incomplete since two years ago, and that is a type of error that has never triggered any warnings.
The consequence for ERP projects actually reinforces the sequence recommended in this article. If your quality documents literally state the edition number in many places, each edition change becomes a task of sifting through documents. It is more durable to write the reference as "the applicable ISO 9001 edition" in one centralized location, then update it there only. Regarding the deadline for certificate adjustments, ISO states that certified organizations receive a transition period and refers inquiries to their respective certification bodies, so the date follows your contract cycle, not a global date.
The same applies to the process maps. Process maps have a much longer lifespan than any ERP configuration, as long as they are written in terms of inputs, outputs, and responsibilities, rather than in the language of software menu names. A map that states "Sales > Quotation > Confirm" will become outdated as soon as the menu changes, whereas a map that states "customer requests verified for stock availability before confirmation" remains valid even if the system is replaced. One last warning that is rarely mentioned: integration makes numbers consistent, not correct. If the process is flawed, ERP merely propagates those incorrect numbers to everyone more quickly.
